Game days

4 07 2009

I realize it’s been a long time since I last wrote a post. I haven’t had must to write about design wise. Until recently my only experience at work was just selling selling selling. I did a good job for my second home game. I had 7 groups. That may not sound like a lot but it was good or so I was told. Recently, I began doing a lot of promotional design. Flyers and an occasional animated web ad have been the extent of it. I was able to design an ad for the Louisiana Tech football program. I would say it was my best layout job, but the man at work I was doing the ad for wanted specific photos that didn’t make for a great layout. I am proud of the background for the ad. I am hoping that the theme will continue on for the BattleWings’ tenth season. But time can only tell.

So I say tonight is game night. It’s probably the best part about my job. There is nothing like game night. My main job tonight will be to work the information booth. Unfornately, it is the fourth and the crowd is looking slim. Fifteen minutes into the doors being opened and there is hardly anyone here. This area by the front door usually has a large crowd, but not this week. I feel let down almost. We have worked very had to promote this game and the crowd feels so small. I later will find out we had are largest walk up crowd all season. So maybe our efforts didn’t go to waste.

So now it’s the Tueday after the game (We were off yesterday due to the holiday). Today means it’s day one of a twenty-one day battle to fill seats for our last home game July 25,2009. I’ve been working on website ads, vouchers, and just plain brainstorming for our take on a very important game. If we continue to win and Arkansas takes a loss between now and then, that lastgame will determine the Southwest Division Champinion and who has a home playoff game. Naturally we want to win and defend our Division Title. But only time can tell if we will succeed in our endeavors. I have lots to do and little time to do it in. I’m sure for those of you who live in Shreveport • Bossier you will see me all over droppping off vouchers and flyers and group sign up sheets. We want a full house and we are prepared to do what it takes to make that happen.

Until next time…

New Job Bonus

15 05 2009

I’m excited to announce that not only will I be starting a new career as a salesman, I will also be designing for the BattleWings! They already have a great brand and I hope to take that brand to a new level. I’ll keep ya posted.

TGIFree – My Bulletin Board

25 04 2009

Looking at this title you might be think, what is she talking about?  Well, I was looking at my newly re-decorated office, that now looks more like an office in a law firm and less like that of a designer, and noticed my bulletin board (that has been banished to the wall behind me because customers won’t see it when they walk into the front office) and realized all that is really left of my ‘creativity’ in decorating as a designer is pinned there.  These great jokes, ‘art’-ifacts and what not have been a great source of interest with the other designers here and myself.  They have had me print out copies for them or email them the images.  So today I’m going to share some great little tidbits of design humor. It’s not great vectors, or photoshop brushes, but a good chuckle can be just as fulfilling as finding that great vector for a project.

1. Periodic Table of Typefaces

typeface-periodictable

A graphic display of 100 “popular, influential, and notorious” fonts in history.  Or as I like to call it:

typeface-zapThe Bad

typeface-courThe Ugly

2. Pixel Humor
design-comic

A funny little comic that has been passed around through email, blogs, and well it’s just all over the internet. And it’s funny because well who hasn’t experienced this type of situation before.

3. Copy vs New

Command Poster

In a field that is riddled with copycats and those that just flat out steal ideas, this poster is a good reminder to take that extra step to create a new idea or a new twist on a classic idea without just straight copying

4 & 5. Why I am a Designer

Why I Am a Designer

Why I Am a Designer

The author of Change Order created this color wheel-based design.  I  (like a few others) adapted the design to me.  I mean I’ve never used Bestine so it doesn’t relate.

6. Why I am  Print Designer

Why I Am a Print Designer

Same guy, same concept, different topic.  Once again I work in the printing industry and this make sense to me and my co-workers.  And yes, long press runs can become quite lulling.

7. A little Religion

bulletin-boardtile

This Christmas present, with matching tea pot and cup, help to make with those seeming impossible projects, days and customers not so bad.  It reads “Nothing will be impossible for you” – Matthew 17:20 . Short, sweet and helpful advice.

9. Kuler Swatches

I have collected a few kuler swatches and printed them out for quick, easy access for when I need inspiration or just a cool color.

10. The Husband

The Husband and Coach Lyles

This isn’t the only picture of Husband (I know not a great, creative pet name) in my office but it’s the most recent and was just printed (this morning actually) on the copier.  The other guy is the assistant coach for the BattleWings and one of Jeremy’s new friends.  We (and Papa John’s) are big supporters of the team.
