Artist of the Month – Andrew Bell

1 05 2009

For those of who that are reading and took Illustration at Tech, you were most likely required to write a paper on an illustrator. Well this is not the guy I picked. I’m quite ashamed that I chose an illustrator from my, at the time, boyfriend’s hunting magazine. Especially since I discovered this artist in high school and just forgot about him for a few years in college (Sorry!). I did however make him the subject of a web II project. I since then have been checking out his daily creatures and latest in prints, toys, and other creative merchandise.

Andrew Bell is an illustrator that had an illustrious career working for Nickelodeon (2000-2005) before giving it up to be a starving illustrator of his imagination. What started as a personal project to practice his illustration skills has tuned into a crazed following of imaginary creatures terrorizing the web, galleries, and specialized toy stores. His website, Creatures in My Head, has also evolved as his career has evolved. He started off with a black and white line drawing on a daily bases to a multi-step process of giving his creatures dimension and some days color. He currently resides in New York but came here from the UK as an elephant jumper in the zoo.

The images below display the evolution of Andrew’s creatures from day one up until now. I’ve also included images of his vinyl toys he’s created and some pictures taken from his Flickr of a few gallery shows he’s had recently. If you like his art as much as I do, check out his site and his store. i personally own his first book and just haven’t gotten around to buying the second. And for those of you that like buy people presents, I would really like his two sushi inspired prints. They would look great in my office.
